According to reports, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has instructed federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, accused of assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was shot and killed in New York City last December.

“The murder of Brian Thompson — an innocent man and father of two young children — was a calculated, cold-blooded act that stunned the nation,” Bondi remarked.
“After thoughtful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we work to fulfill President Trump’s mission to curb violent crime and Make America Safe Again,” she added.
At 26 years old, Mangione is facing both state and federal charges for the murder, with federal charges including the use of a firearm in the act, making him subject to the death penalty.
The state charges are anticipated to be tried first, carrying a potential sentence of life imprisonment, followed by the federal case against Mangione.
The charges against Mangione arise from the execution-style murder of Thompson outside the New York Hilton Midtown in Manhattan on December 4th.
There are claims that Mangione’s actions were influenced by the book “Delay, Deny, Defend, Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It,” as shell casings found at the crime scene bore the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose.”
Additionally, law enforcement discovered Mangione’s manifesto.
In the document, he attempts to justify his actions, arguing that “these parasites [Thompson] simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy.”
Despite his manifesto, Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges, and he has not yet been federally indicted — as federal prosecutors are allowing state prosecutors to proceed first.
The New York Post has reported that the U.S. insurance industry has lobbied federal authorities to pursue a case against Mangione, expressing that they were “considering asking for the death penalty.”
Mangione is currently detained in a federal facility in Brooklyn, New York.
