Bill Gates, the well-known co-founder of Microsoft, has forecast that advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) will drastically reduce human involvement in numerous conventional roles, including those in healthcare and education.

In a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” Gates envisioned a future where humans are largely unnecessary for “most things,” asserting that AI technologies will adeptly handle tasks currently dependent on specialized human expertise.
Gates noted that there is a lack of expertise in professions such as medicine and education, which depend heavily on the skills of exceptional doctors and dedicated teachers. He further suggested that within the next ten years, “great medical advice [and] great tutoring” will be both free and widely available.
During a conversation with Arthur Brooks, a PhD social scientist and Harvard professor known for his research on happiness, Gates expanded on his notion of a new era he termed “free intelligence.”
He predicted that AI will increasingly integrate into everyday life, transforming sectors ranging from healthcare and diagnostics to various education levels, where AI “tutors” will become commonplace.
“It’s very profound and even a little bit scary — because it’s happening very quickly, and there is no upper bound,” Gates shared with Brooks.
While recognizing possible disruptions, Gates remained optimistic about the beneficial effects of AI, which may include advancements in medicine, solutions for climate change, and universal access to education. He also highlighted that he believes certain human behaviors will always remain distinctively human.
“There will be some things we reserve for ourselves,” Gates mentioned to Fallon, referencing entertainment as an example.
“However, when it comes to producing, moving, and growing food, those will eventually become solved problems.”
Having stepped down as CEO of Microsoft in 2000, Gates continued to play a different role at the company, gradually transition to a part-time position in June 2008 to concentrate on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
In 2021, Gates also underwent a divorce from his wife Melinda after 27 years of marriage, following media coverage revealing his connections with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“Mr. Gates, in turn, complimented Mr. Epstein’s charm and intellect. In an email to colleagues the following day, he stated: ‘A very attractive Swedish woman and her daughter dropped by, and I ended up staying there quite late.’ Mr. Gates soon met Mr. Epstein again. At a TED conference in Long Beach, California, attendees noticed the two engaged in private discussions. Later that spring, on May 3, 2011, Mr. Gates visited Mr. Epstein at his New York mansion, according to emails and a photograph reviewed by The New York Times,” reported The New York Times.
