Alabama Legislature Approves Measure Prohibiting State-Funded DEI Initiatives
Alabama’s Republican-led legislature has approved a new bill that prohibits state-funded diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in public universities, local education boards, and other government agencies.
The bill, as reported by The Hill, prohibits teaching “divisive concepts” related to race and gender, and also restricts transgender students from using restrooms based on their gender identity.
Although the bill allows DEI programs on college campuses, it mandates that they cannot be funded by the state.
Republican state Rep. Ed Oliver, a leading sponsor of the bill, criticized DEI initiatives for promoting division, race-based programs, and pushing a far-left political ideology on students.
Despite this, Alabama Democrats are questioning the constitutionality of the bill, concerned about its potential impact on Black students, staff, and faculty. A petition to overturn the bill has gathered over 6,000 signatures.
The bill now awaits the signature of Republican Gov. Kay Ivey. If signed, it will become law on Oct. 1.
