On Friday, the USCG announced that they found the missing plane approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome.
Initially, 3 people were discovered inside the aircraft and were confirmed deceased, while the remaining 7 individuals are believed to still be in the plane; however, they remain inaccessible due to the aircraft’s condition.
The commuter flight, managed by Bering Air, was en route from Unalakleet to Nome in western Alaska when they lost contact about 12 miles off the coast, as reported by the Coast Guard.
FlightRadar tracking indicated that the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX last communicated over Norton Sound at 3:16 p.m. local time on Thursday.
During a press conference, the Coast Guard mentioned that data suggested a “rapid loss in elevation and rapid loss in speed” for the plane.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted he had discussions with Senators Dan Sullivan (R-Ak.) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Ak.) to extend full support from the Department of Transportation.
“The @FAANews is assigning an investigator from the Aviation Safety Office of Accident and Prevention,” he added.
