Allies Consider Transferring Ukraine Weapons Group to NATO
An American-led multinational organization that coordinates the shipment of arms to Ukraine could potentially be transferred to NATO control in order to facilitate the flow of weapons to Kyiv if Donald Trump is elected president, as reported by Politico on Tuesday.
High-ranking officials in Brussels are expected to discuss the gradual transfer of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group to NATO during the NATO foreign ministerial meeting this week, with the finalization of the move potentially taking place at the NATO leaders’ summit in Washington in July, according to a U.S. official.
This move is seen as a way to involve other NATO countries more significantly in the process, especially if Trump wins a second term as president.
However, Defense Department spokesperson Maj. Charlie Dietz did not confirm the talks, stating that the DOD had no new announcements regarding the group’s format or structure and that they are constantly discussing ways to ensure sustained support for Ukraine in the best possible way.
The Ukraine group, established early in the conflict two years ago, has expedited the delivery of billions of dollars in critical equipment, weapons, and aid to Ukraine to combat Russian forces.
Former Pentagon and NATO official Jim Townsend expressed that there is a belief within a portion of the NATO group that institutionalizing the process under NATO would be beneficial in the event of a Trump reelection. Townsend emphasized the importance of isolating the process from potential distractions or lack of funding from the U.S.
