Veteran critic of Donald Trump, Bill Maher, a liberal commentator and television host, offered an unexpected compliment to the conservative president, claiming Trump is “one of the most effective politicians”—just days after their dinner meeting at the White House.

On Sunday, Maher shared his thoughts during an episode of his “Club Random” podcast in a discussion with NewsNation journalist Chris Cuomo, brother to former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
“Trump really … is one of the most effective politicians … regardless of how you feel about his policies or his character,” stated the 69-year-old host.
“As a politician, you need to embrace your true self,” he added.
Recently, Maher dined with the GOP president at the White House, an engagement reportedly facilitated by musician Kid Rock, who had appeared on Maher’s podcast in March.
Despite his criticism on numerous topics, Maher acknowledged Trump’s political skill set when compared to Democrats.
“He has those unique moments that no other politician seems to capture. The Democrats need to find someone like that,” Maher recognized. “But let’s face it — they’ve been trying for years and haven’t succeeded yet.”
“When he conveyed that message to the Taliban leader, it was powerful — ‘This is an aerial picture of your house. If one American is harmed during our exit, just know I know where you live,’” Maher recounted.
“I thought, ‘Can we get the music going now? Even if it’s Donald Trump and he’s perceived as the worst person imaginable, I absolutely love that!’” he added.
Maher also commended Trump’s connection with American voters.
“At one point he said, ‘When someone comes after New York, they have to go through me.’ That hit home for me,” he reflected.
Kid Rock noted that during their dinner, the majority of the conversation revolved around shared interests.
“Both are incredibly knowledgeable about American history, highly intelligent individuals, and quite reasonable despite their previously contentious relationship. It was enjoyable,” he remarked.
