Analyzing Super Tuesday States and Delegate Counts
Donald Trump, the Republican frontrunner, emerged victorious in the Super Tuesday nominating contests that took place across the country. Super Tuesday marked the most significant day of primaries in the 2024 presidential election cycle, with fifteen states holding Republican contests, including California and Texas, the two most populous states. More than a third of delegates – 865 out of 2,429 – were up for grabs, with a minimum of 1,215 delegates needed to secure the nomination.
On the Democratic side, about a third of delegates were also at stake in primaries nationwide. Similar to Trump, President Joe Biden faced no serious opposition for his party’s nomination.
Here is a breakdown of the Super Tuesday results and delegate counts state by state:
VIRGINIA
Race call: Trump wins
Republican delegate count: 48 Virginia is an open primary state that allows registered voters to participate in either primary. Trump held a significant lead over Haley in Virginia, a state he won by a large margin in the 2020 general election.
NORTH CAROLINA
Race call: Trump wins
Republican delegate count: 74 North Carolina was closely watched as a potential battleground state. Trump narrowly won the state in 2020 against Biden. North Carolina allows unaffiliated voters to participate in any primary, which could have influenced Haley’s performance.
OKLAHOMA
Race call: Trump wins
Republican delegate count: 43
Trump secured victory in Oklahoma, a state where every county voted for him in 2020. Trump maintained a significant lead over Haley in polling leading up to the primary.
TEXAS
Race call: Trump wins
Republican delegate count: 161
Trump was the overwhelming favorite in Texas, with polls indicating a strong lead over Haley. Immigration was a major issue in the Texas primary, with both Trump and Biden making visits to the U.S.-Mexico border.
And so on for the other states…
