Andy Kim Emerges Victorious in New Jersey Democratic Senate Primary, Securing Menendez’s Seat

Democratic Rep. Andy Kim emerged victorious in New Jersey’s Senate primary, positioning himself well for the upcoming general election in the state known for leaning blue. This win comes shortly after Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez filed to run as an independent amidst his federal corruption trial.

Newsmax has projected Kim as the winner of the primary.

Kim’s path to victory was filled with challenges, notably a tough primary battle with New Jersey’s first lady Tammy Murphy. However, Murphy, a first-time candidate and the wife of Governor Phil Murphy, withdrew from the race to avoid engaging in negative campaigning against a fellow Democrat. Kim ultimately defeated labor leader Patricia Campos-Medina and grassroots organizer Lawrence Hamm in the primary.

The motivation behind Kim’s candidacy stems in part from the corruption charges faced by the incumbent Menendez. Menendez opted not to seek reelection as a Democrat this year and filed as an independent. While Menendez hopes to be cleared of the charges soon, the uncertainty surrounding his trial could impact the Senate race in New Jersey and potentially benefit Republicans who might use his candidacy to divide the Democratic vote.

Kim, a three-term congressman known for his role in cleaning up the Capitol after the January 6, 2021 insurrection, officially entered the Senate race the day after Menendez’s indictment, emphasizing the need for progress in the state.

The Democratic race for Senate in New Jersey also saw Republicans gearing up, with southern New Jersey hotel developer Curtis Bashaw gaining significant county party support and Mendham Borough Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner securing an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

Although New Jersey has not elected a Republican to the Senate since 1972, Menendez’s independent candidacy has added an element of unpredictability to the upcoming election, with Republicans eyeing it as a potential advantage.

Kim criticized Menendez’s independent run as self-serving, emphasizing his commitment to restoring integrity to the U.S. Senate.

The content of the 2024 election in New Jersey also touched on other key issues, including President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump’s nominations. Additionally, the Democratic Socialists of America supported a protest vote for delegates at the Democratic national convention, focusing on justice for Palestine and a permanent ceasefire.

The elimination of the “county line” system for Democratic candidates in New Jersey marked a significant change following a lawsuit filed by Kim and others. This alteration aims to level the playing field for candidates and aligns New Jersey with other states’ primary practices.

The 2024 election in New Jersey saw the conclusion of the county line system, leading to a more equitable grouping of Democratic candidates on the ballot.

House candidates were also chosen in New Jersey, with several closely watched races having ties to Menendez.

Polls closed at 8 p.m. ET.
