AOC Contemplates Departure from Social Media Platform X
Progressive Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is considering closing her account on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform. Ocasio-Cortez believes that Musk’s ownership of X has dramatically changed the media environment. She has already scaled back her activity on the platform due to concerns about Musk’s influence. Ocasio-Cortez is worried that her continued presence on X validates the changes Musk has made and how he uses the platform. She is exploring alternative ways to build audiences but recognizes the importance of having access to a messaging platform that people trust. Ocasio-Cortez previously threatened to stop using Twitter after Musk promoted an account impersonating her, and she has expressed frustration with the platform’s claim that the majority of its content is “healthy” when she has personally experienced increased harassment.
