AOC’s Support for Student Loan Forgiveness Triggered by Personal Debt Experience

New York Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has disclosed that she owes between $15,000 and $50,000 in student loans as of 2022. Ocasio-Cortez has been a vocal advocate for student loan forgiveness and has called on President Joe Biden to cancel student debt. In response to a Marist poll that showed Biden with a low approval rating among young adults, Ocasio-Cortez mentioned cancelling student loan debt as a priority. The Biden administration announced plans to automatically cancel $39 billion in student debt for over 800,000 borrowers, which has sparked a lawsuit from conservative groups. Ocasio-Cortez supports Biden’s plan but has also called for additional forgiveness for those with higher amounts of debt.
