Arizona Political Action Committee Launches Campaign for Abortion Rights Amendment in 2024
Abortion rights groups in Arizona are working to add a ballot measure in 2024 that would amend the state constitution to protect abortion rights. The new political action committee, Arizona for Abortion Access, is seeking to overturn a state law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The proposed amendment, known as the “Arizona Abortion Access Act,” would allow abortions up to fetal viability, typically around 22 to 24 weeks. The PAC includes the ACLU of Arizona, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, and NARAL Arizona. The group must gather nearly 384,000 signatures by July 3, 2024, to add the measure to the 2024 ballot. However, they face opposition from social conservative groups who view the amendment as an extreme power grab. A recent poll found that 62% of Arizonans support legal abortion in most cases. California and Vermont have previously passed similar amendments to protect abortion rights, and if successful, Arizona would join Maryland, New York, and Ohio in voting on such amendments. The signature collection for the ballot measure will begin next month.
