“Major Incident in the Salt Lake area,” was stated by the Honolulu Police in a post on X. “HPD, HFD, and EMS are responding to a significant situation in the vicinity of Keaka Drive. Please avoid the area while first responders render aid.”
The department further mentioned that they are “working diligently to handle the situation and ensure the safety of everyone in the vicinity,” according to Channel2Now.
Local paramedics believe the event was triggered when a firework accidentally detonated in the hands of a 14-year-old boy. The boy received treatment at the scene and was then transferred to a trauma center.
The tragic event occurred in the Salt Lake-Aliamanu area, a neighborhood in Honolulu County.
Nikos Leverenz, a local resident, remarked in an interview that he drove by the roadblock and saw numerous emergency vehicles at the site.
“While driving back from New Year’s Eve meditation, I encountered a substantial presence of police and emergency vehicles on Salt Lake & Pakini. I doubted it was a water main break. It’s distressing to learn of multiple fatalities and over 20 injuries following a significant fireworks incident in Aliamanu. “Hawaii #HInews,” Leverenz expressed.
