Authorities in Aurora, Colorado are treating an armed break-in at an apartment complex early Tuesday morning, which resulted in the apprehension of 14 suspects, as “indisputably a gang-related incident.”

The police arrived at The Edge at Lowry Apartments on Dallas Street shortly before 2:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a potential armed home invasion involving beatings and abductions, as outlined by the Aurora Police.

During a press briefing, Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain shared that approximately “13 to 15 individuals,” mostly men but including some women, invaded an apartment occupied by two individuals. In total, 14 individuals were taken into custody.

Law enforcement claims that the suspects “threatened and restrained” the victims after relocating them to a different apartment within the same complex.

According to the officials, one man among the victims suffered a stab wound but is expected to survive. Both victims are currently under medical care for their injuries. After being released by their captors, the victims promptly called 9-1-1.

“They were pistol-whipped, assaulted, and mistreated,” Chamberlain said. “Does that fall under the definition of torture for me? Absolutely.”

“This is unquestionably a gang-related situation. I cannot confirm yet which gang is involved,” he remarked. Chamberlain also mentioned the strong likelihood of a connection to the Tren de Aragua (TdA) gang, though he refrained from making a definitive identification at this point.

Earlier this summer, armed members of the TdA gang were observed in the stairs and hallways of The Edge at Lowry Apartments, an incident that garnered widespread attention through a viral video. TdA is known to be a violent gang originating from Venezuela.

“We have placed significant focus on that area,” Chamberlain stated, indicating that some of the gang members who were captured may have since escaped. He did not detail how they managed to elude capture.
