Barack and Michelle Obama Officially Back Kamala Harris, Providing Important Endorsement

Former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama have officially endorsed Kamala Harris in her campaign for the White House. This endorsement is significant as it comes from the nation’s most popular Democrats.

The announcement was made in a video released on Friday morning, showing Harris receiving the endorsement through a joint phone call with the former first couple. Harris has been gaining momentum as the likely nominee for the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden withdrew his reelection bid and backed her against former President Donald Trump.

This endorsement highlights the historic connection between the first Black president and the first woman, first Black woman, and first person of Asian descent to serve as vice president. Harris is now aiming to break these same barriers at the presidential level.

During the call, the former president expressed his pride in endorsing Harris and his commitment to supporting her in the election. Michelle Obama also shared her pride and excitement for the historic moment, referring to Harris as “my girl, Kamala.”

Harris, who has a long-standing relationship with the Obamas, thanked them for their friendship and expressed her eagerness to campaign alongside them in the lead up to Election Day on Nov. 5.

The Obamas are among the final major party figures to formally endorse Harris, with the former president choosing to remain a party elder operating above the political fray. Their endorsement is expected to further boost Harris’s candidacy.

Harris has already garnered the support of a majority of delegates to the Democratic National Convention, which is set to begin on Aug. 19 in Chicago. By early August, she is expected to be officially nominated as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.

The endorsement from the Obamas comes after several key Democratic figures, including Biden and Pelosi, had already backed Harris. The former president’s strategic approach to the endorsement reflects his cautious yet influential role within the party.

Both Obamas have been active in campaigning for Democratic candidates in past elections, delivering speeches and participating in events to rally support. Their support for Harris adds further momentum to her campaign as she seeks to make history as the first female president of the United States.
