Ben Carson Supports a Nationwide Ban on Abortion
Dr. Ben Carson, who has been mentioned as a potential running mate for presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has called for a federal ban on abortion.
Carson, a renowned pediatric neurosurgeon who served as secretary of housing and urban development in Trump’s administration, expressed his views in his new book, “The Perilous Fight.” His stance on a federal abortion ban stands in contrast to Trump’s position, as reported by NBC News.
“What is needed is legislation that guarantees the right to life for all American citizens, including those still in the womb,” Carson writes in his book, released on Tuesday. “Therefore, we must be vocal about saving our fellow human beings through the legislative process. They are counting on us!”
In his book, Carson mentioned that he could consider allowing women to terminate pregnancies to save their lives, but he does not support exceptions for cases of rape and incest, according to NBC News.
“Rape and incest — I would not be in favor of terminating a pregnancy because it resulted from those circumstances,” he stated.
Trump, on the other hand, mentioned in an interview that he believes the issue should be decided by the states, whether regarding prosecution for abortions or monitoring pregnancies. He chose not to comment on access to the abortion pill mifepristone, which has been a topic of intense legal debate, as noted by The Associated Press.
In an interview published by Time magazine, Trump repeatedly emphasized that he believes the decision should be left to the states when answering questions about abortion policy.
“You don’t need a federal ban,” he stated. “Roe v. Wade … was more about returning the issue to the states. Each state can negotiate its own agreements. Florida will have different regulations than Georgia or other states.”
