Bernie Sanders Steps in to Support Biden, Calm Progressive Concerns

Progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., stated that President Joe Biden’s lack of popularity among voters is insignificant because he is competing against “the most dangerous president in American history.”

Sanders expressed his strong opinions in an opinion piece for The Guardian, describing the anticipated face-off between Biden and the presumed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in the upcoming general election.

Comparing the 2024 presidential election to pivotal events in U.S. history like the Civil War, the Great Depression, and the attack on Pearl Harbor, Sanders emphasized the gravity of the current political landscape.

“Let’s be clear,” Sanders emphasized in his column published on Wednesday. “Biden is not running against God. He is running against Donald Trump, the most dangerous president in American history whose potential second term, if reelected, could be even more detrimental than his first. And, even on his worst day, Biden is a far better option than Trump.”

Sanders acknowledged the disagreements among progressives, including himself, regarding Biden’s stance on Israel’s conflict with Hamas terrorists. Despite Biden’s decision to withhold providing offensive weapons for attacking the city of Rafah in southern Israel, Sanders highlighted the differences in policy between the two candidates.

“If you have concerns about Biden’s approach to Israel and the Gaza conflict, it pales in comparison to Trump’s position,” Sanders remarked. “While Biden has restricted certain weapon transfers to Israel and criticized Prime Minister Netanyahu, Trump and his GOP allies fully endorse the severe devastation of the Palestinian population.”

Sanders pointed out that Biden would be a more favorable choice over Trump in addressing issues related to wealth inequality, abortion rights, and climate change.

“Trump’s agenda includes substantial tax breaks for billionaires, as well as appointments of vehemently anti-union officials,” Sanders explained. “Conversely, Biden has shown support for workers by joining a picket line, played a role in creating millions of well-paying jobs through infrastructure development and manufacturing, and has alleviated student loan debts for many struggling young individuals.”

Regarding abortion, Sanders highlighted Trump’s efforts in appointing justices who have influenced decisions to overturn Roe v Wade, contrasting it with Biden’s unwavering support for pro-choice policies.

Sanders also criticized Trump’s dismissal of climate change as a hoax, warning of the consequences his leadership would have on the environment. In contrast, Sanders commended Biden for prioritizing investments in sustainable energy and energy efficiency unlike any other president in history.
