Biden Accuses Netanyahu of Deliberately Extending Conflict

President Joe Biden suggested that Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be prolonging the conflict in Gaza for political reasons, stating in an interview with Time Magazine that “there is every reason for people to draw that conclusion.”

His comments come amidst a proposed truce and hostage release deal that is being considered by Israel and negotiators with Hamas, the group responsible for initiating the conflict. Biden previously dismissed the International Criminal Court’s decision to pursue arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, calling it “outrageous.”

In his truce plan announcement, Biden emphasized that Israel has successfully weakened Hamas’ forces, making them incapable of launching further attacks. The plan includes the release of remaining hostages and bodies for an extended cease-fire, putting pressure on Israel to accept the deal.

Netanyahu’s conditions for ending the conflict remain unchanged, with a focus on destroying Hamas’ capabilities and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel. Despite looming tensions, Netanyahu is expected to address Congress on June 13, although he will not meet with Biden, who will be attending a summit in Italy.
