Biden Administration Appoints New Leader for Border Matters
The Biden administration is reportedly bringing in a new point guard on border issues to the White House.
According to Axios, Blas Nuñez-Neto of the Department of Homeland Security has taken on a key role in addressing one of the most contentious issues for President Joe Biden.
This development comes as Biden considers executive actions on immigration to tackle the issue that voters see as a top concern ahead of the Nov. 5 election.
In April, a Gallup poll revealed that immigration has been named the “most important” problem facing the nation for the third consecutive month, marking the longest streak of concern in 24 years.
Nuñez-Neto, who was born in Argentina, has been at the forefront of the administration’s efforts to address the surge of migrants and asylum seekers at the southern border, according to Axios.
He was also heavily involved in Senate negotiations over a bipartisan border deal that ultimately failed in February due to opposition from Republicans and former President Donald Trump.
“With his extensive knowledge of immigration policy and expertise in foreign relations, [Nuñez-Neto] provides a unique and valuable perspective on some of the most complex challenges we are facing,” commented DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a statement to the news outlet.
Axios reported that Nuñez-Neto will be part of a White House team led by deputy chief of staff Natalie Quillian, rather than being part of the Domestic Policy Council or National Security Council, which have traditionally been leading on border issues.
Since Susan Rice’s departure as head of the DPC, Quillian, who is a close ally of Biden chief of staff Jeff Zients, has taken on more responsibility for the DPC’s immigration portfolio, as per Axios.
