Biden allocates $970 million for improvements at 114 US airports
The Biden administration announced on Thursday that it will be allocating $970 million for improvements at 114 airports across the United States. The enhancements will include wider concourses, new baggage-handling systems, and terminals at smaller airfields.
The funding is part of a $5 billion grant program aimed at modernizing airport terminals.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida will receive the largest amount, $50 million, for a project to connect terminals behind the security checkpoints and provide new retail space and other amenities.
Other airports receiving funding include O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, San Francisco International, and Los Angeles International.
A Federal Aviation Administration official reported that there were over 600 applications for the funding, totaling $14 billion in requests.
The Biden administration has been focused on improving air travel and has proposed measures to protect air travelers, including addressing airline fees and customer service improvements.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the importance of investing in physical infrastructure to enhance the travel experience.
In addition to the $970 million, last month the Transportation Department announced $244 million in grants for improvements to other airport facilities, such as runways and taxiways.
