Biden anticipates that the succeeding president will appoint ‘a few’ justices
President Joe Biden, in a campaign speech in Philadelphia, mentioned to his supporters that the next president will likely appoint two new Supreme Court Justices.
In front of a mostly Black audience at Girard College, Biden cautioned about the possible consequences if former President Donald Trump is re-elected in November. He emphasized the importance of appointing progressive judges to counteract the current Trump-appointed justices who have made decisions against voting rights, Roe v. Wade, affirmative action, and other critical issues.
Earlier on the same day, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris launched a campaign to allocate additional tax funds to Black student organizations, community groups, and faith centers. This initiative comes as polling shows a significant increase in Black voter support for Trump compared to the previous election cycle.
The Democrats have been highlighting the impact of Trump-appointed judges on the Supreme Court as a way to rally support among their progressive base. Currently, conservative-leaning justices outnumber liberal justices, and there are concerns about the potential for more conservative appointments if Trump were to win again.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing and replacement with Justice Amy Coney Barrett shifted the Supreme Court further to the right, prompting calls for Justice Sonia Sotomayor to step down so that a liberal replacement could be appointed by Biden in case Trump wins a second term.
