On Wednesday, Biden spoke to the American public for the final time as the president before the inauguration events for President-elect Donald Trump commence.
“This will be my last address to you, the American people, from this desk in the Oval Office as president,” he stated. “I’ve been contemplating who we are and perhaps even more importantly, who we aspire to be.”
“Over the last four years, our democracy has remained robust, and each day I have upheld my promise to serve as president for all Americans during one of the most challenging times in our nation’s history,” he added.
Biden commenced his farewell address by announcing a new ceasefire and hostage release agreement involving Israel and Hamas.
“This agreement was formulated and negotiated by my team, and it will primarily be put into action by the incoming administration. That’s why I instructed my team to keep the new administration fully updated — because collaboration as Americans is essential.”
Biden then expressed his intention to utilize his final address “to caution the country about certain issues that cause me substantial worry.”
“I am concerned about the alarming accumulation of power among a small group of extremely wealthy individuals, and the dire implications of their unchecked authority,” he declared.
“An oligarchy of vast wealth, power, and influence is emerging in America that poses a genuine threat to our entire democracy, our fundamental rights and freedoms, and the opportunity for everyone to prosper,” Biden remarked.
He elaborated that these repercussions are visible throughout the nation, likening the current situation to events that transgressed a century ago, stating that “the American people stood up to the robber barons back in that era.”
Biden also reflected on the nation’s history and the Statue of Liberty, emphasizing that Lady Liberty remains “a lasting emblem of our nation’s spirit.”
He asserted that he would leave the country in a better economic position, highlighting his initiatives to reduce drug costs and furthering the bipartisan infrastructure law. He also noted that unemployment rates have remained low throughout his presidency.
Biden praised Vice President Harris as an invaluable partner in these efforts and stated that she and her spouse, Doug Emhoff, have become “like family.”
As he concluded his presidency, he acknowledged the significant role social media plays in today’s concerns.
“I’m also troubled by the potential emergence of a tech industrial complex that could manifest serious risks for our nation,” he warned.
“The American public is inundated with a flood of misinformation and disinformation, facilitating the misuse of power. The free press is eroding, and editors are vanishing,” he continued.
“Social media platforms are neglecting their responsibility for fact-checking. The truth is enveloped by falsehoods told for power and profit. We must hold social media accountable to safeguard our children, families, and democracy from abuses of power,” he urged.
Biden also highlighted the significant “possibilities and risks” associated with artificial intelligence.
“Artificial intelligence represents the most crucial technology of our time, possibly of any time. It presents extraordinary potential and threats for our economy, security, society, and humanity. AI even has the capability to help us achieve my goal of eradicating cancer as we know it. However, without proper safeguards, AI could generate new dangers to our rights, our way of life, and our privacy, along with how we work and maintain national security,” he cautioned.
Biden emphasized the need to ensure AI benefits humanity and that America should spearhead its development.
“In the era of AI, it is crucial for the populace to govern. As the land of liberty, America – not China – must take the lead globally in AI development,” he affirmed.
As he contemplated his “legacy,” Biden expressed hope for enduring remembrance.
“It will take time to appreciate the full impact of what we have accomplished together. But the seeds are sown, and they will flourish and bloom for years to come,” he stated.
Biden extended his best wishes for the incoming administration, reaffirming his desire for the success of the U.S. and promising “to ensure a peaceful and orderly transfer of power.”
“Now it’s your responsibility to safeguard our principles. May you all uphold the flame of liberty. May you keep the faith. I love America, and I know you do too. God bless you all. And may God watch over our troops. Thank you for this great honor,” Biden concluded.
