Biden is expected to make a statement on the Trump verdict after keeping silent

President Joe Biden is expected to make a statement regarding former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial after the verdict in the business records case in New York, regardless of the outcome, according to a report by Politico published on Friday.

Closing arguments are set to begin next week with a verdict potentially being reached by the end of the week.

Last year, Biden instructed Democratic Party entities under White House control, including his campaign and the Democratic National Committee, not to comment on any of the criminal investigations or trials involving Trump.

Reports suggest that Biden’s remarks will focus solely on the New York verdict and will avoid addressing the three other indictments against Trump.

The president intends to deliver the statement from the White House, rather than a campaign setting, in an effort to maintain a non-political stance on the verdict, as per Politico. Some Republicans claim that Biden’s Department of Justice is influencing the current trial in New York as well as the other three criminal indictments.

Despite this, Biden’s campaign team is reportedly planning various strategies depending on the verdict, with discussions underway about using the tagline “Convicted Felon Donald Trump” in case of a guilty verdict, as reported by Politico.

Prepared remarks are also being drafted for scenarios of acquittal or a hung jury. The overarching theme of Biden’s statement will revolve around upholding the integrity of the country’s legal system and the importance of respecting the legal process.

According to an anonymous source cited by Politico, “This is an important moment and the president first and foremost needs to stress that the American system works, even and especially in an election year. And in a measured way, it becomes part of his argument against Trump, too: Do Americans really want this?”

Regardless of the verdict, it is unlikely that Republicans will agree with Biden’s statement.

House Judiciary Committee Chair, Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, recently sent a letter to New York Attorney General Letitia James requesting documents related to Matthew Colangelo, a former senior official in Biden’s DOJ who is a key attorney in the New York trial. Jordan and other Republican leaders are looking into what they view as politically motivated prosecutions of Biden’s opponent from the previous election.
