President Joe Biden visited Florida to survey the damage caused by Hurricane Idalia and provide support to those affected by the storm. However, he did not meet with Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis, who is a potential presidential rival for 2024. Biden had initially stated that he would meet with DeSantis, but the governor’s spokesman later said that no meeting was planned due to security and ongoing recovery efforts. Biden mentioned that DeSantis would not be present when asked about the meeting. While Biden and DeSantis have been in regular contact regarding the storm, they have had disagreements on various issues. The failure to meet will not impact recovery efforts, according to FEMA’s director. This absence could be attributed to political considerations as the Republican presidential primary race intensifies. The president and the first lady will tour affected areas, receive briefings, and speak to first responders during their visit to Florida before heading to Delaware.
