“With his compassion and moral clarity, he endeavored to eliminate disease, promote peace, advance civil rights and human rights, encourage free and fair elections, assist the homeless, and always be an advocate for the most vulnerable,” Biden stated. “He saved, lifted, and transformed lives across the globe. He exemplified great character and courage, infused with hope and optimism. We will forever cherish the sight of him and Rosalynn together.”
“The bond shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter embodies true partnership, and their humble leadership epitomizes patriotism,” the president remarked.
Carter departed this life at age 100 in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where he had been receiving hospice care for nearly two years.
Furthermore, Biden announced his intention to arrange a state funeral for Carter to be conducted in Washington D.C.
“To the entire Carter family, we extend our heartfelt thanks for sharing Jimmy with America and the world,” the president expressed. “To their staff, from the beginning to the end, we are confident that you will continue the good work that upholds their legacy.”
During a press conference on Sunday evening, the president noted that mourners worldwide felt as though they had lost a “friend” despite never having met him.
“That’s because Jimmy Carter lived a life measured not by words but by his actions,” Biden stated, reflecting on his 50-year acquaintance with Carter.
Biden also mentioned how the shared experience of battling cancer, which Carter was diagnosed with in 2015, served as a connection between their families.
The president recalled how Carter offered comfort to him and his wife Jill when their son succumbed to cancer in 2015.
“What I admired most about him was his belief that everyone deserved a fair chance. No guarantees, just an opportunity. Everyone deserves a shot,” he said.
