Biden Praises France as ‘Our Oldest Ally’ during Paris Visit
President Joe Biden referred to France as America’s “first friend” since its inception and highlighted the strong alliance between the two countries during a state visit with French President Emmanuel Macron. The visit aimed to showcase their partnership on global security issues and address previous trade tensions.
Biden and Macron participated in ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to emphasize the importance of supporting Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.
Although both leaders have expressed frustrations over the pace of aid for Ukraine, they focused on the enduring alliance between their countries that was fortified during historical events like Normandy.
The state visit included a wreath-laying at the Arc de Triomphe and a military parade at the Champs-Élysées, followed by official meetings at the Élysée Palace and a state dinner in honor of President Biden and his wife.
During the visit, discussions on the conflict in Ukraine took priority, but the symbolic friendship between the U.S. and France, dating back to the Revolutionary War, remained a central theme.
Macron commended Biden for his leadership and partnership with Europe, contrasting it with the foreign policy approach of former President Donald Trump. Despite previous disagreements, Macron acknowledged Biden’s commitment to Europe and thanked him for his support.
The leaders also addressed the situation in Gaza, calling for humanitarian aid and a ceasefire, as well as discussing trade practices and global economic challenges, including U.S. tariffs on Chinese products.
The visit concluded with discussions on European politics and the upcoming European Parliament election, where far-right parties were expected to gain traction while pro-European movements faced challenges.
