Biden Supports Schumer’s Call for New Elections in Israel
President Joe Biden voiced his support on Friday for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer after Schumer called for new elections in Israel, indicating a growing strain in the relationship between the U.S. and its closest Middle East ally over the conflict in Gaza.
Schumer, a Jewish Democrat from New York, sparked controversy in both countries when he criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying that Netanyahu had “lost his way” and expressed concerns over the growing Palestinian casualties in the region.
“He made a good speech,” Biden commented during a meeting at the Oval Office. “I think he raised serious concerns that are shared not only by him but by many Americans.”
The backing of Schumer by President Biden may further strain Netanyahu’s relationship with the U.S., as Netanyahu’s political party, Likud, criticized Schumer for undermining Israel’s elected government.
Biden’s comments reflect a shift in his stance on the conflict, which escalated after Hamas attacked Israel, resulting in a significant number of casualties on both sides.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken also weighed in on the situation, expressing the need for a clear plan to protect civilians in Gaza from further escalation of the conflict.
Despite the challenging conversations between allies, Blinken emphasized that the ability to communicate openly and honestly is a strength of the U.S.-Israeli relationship.
