Biden to Unveil Proposal for Temporary Gaza Port to Boost Humanitarian Aid Relief
President Joe Biden is set to announce a plan during his State of the Union address on Thursday for the U.S. military to assist in establishing a temporary port on the Gaza coast. This initiative aims to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to the embattled territory amid the Israel-Hamas conflict, as per administration sources.
These officials, speaking anonymously to offer a glimpse into the upcoming announcement, clarified that the plan does not entail deploying American troops on the ground to construct the pier. Instead, the port is intended to facilitate the shipment of essential items such as food and medicine.
Details regarding the construction of the pier were not disclosed by the officials. However, one official mentioned that the U.S. military possesses unique capabilities to carry out operations “just offshore.”
The prolonged conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in significant devastation in Gaza, particularly in the northern regions. This has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with many Palestinians struggling to access basic necessities like food.
Amidst the challenges of coordinating aid deliveries with the Israeli military, ongoing hostilities, and the breakdown of public order, humanitarian organizations have found it increasingly difficult to provide assistance within Gaza.
To address the urgent needs in Gaza, the U.S. military has initiated airdrops of aid supplies in the region.
