Biden’s Asylum Loopholes Pose Challenges, According to Immigration Experts
Some immigration experts are concerned about the loopholes in President Joe Biden’s asylum ban, as reported by the Washington Examiner on Thursday.
Biden recently announced a halt to asylum processing at the southern border with Mexico when illegal entries reach a certain threshold determined by him.
This policy goes into effect immediately when arrests for illegal entry reach 2,500, despite approximately 4,000 people entering the U.S. daily. This move represents a significant shift in policy on a key election-year issue, drawing criticism from Republicans due to the surge in new arrivals.
Legal challenges are expected to arise.
James Massa, CEO of Numbers USA, the country’s largest grassroots immigration-reduction organization, stated that Biden’s proclamation “offers no practical relief to the DHS, does not deter illegal border crossers, and is merely a political maneuver.”
Senator Chuck Grassley raised concerns about exceptions in the ban, suggesting that they could potentially encourage more illegal immigration and further exploitation of unaccompanied children.
Asylum policy director Kennji Kizuka from the International Rescue Committee expressed that the order leaves asylum seekers in a state of uncertainty and “legal limbo.”
Senator Alex Padilla warned that the asylum ban will not effectively address border challenges and may prevent individuals with legitimate asylum claims from seeking safety.
