Biden’s Border Order Exempts Tens of Thousands of Migrants

According to a report by the New York Post on Thursday, tens of thousands of migrants could be exempt from President Joe Biden’s new executive order designed to reduce the influx of illegal immigrants at the southern border if their home countries refuse to take them back.

The Post referenced a federal memo stating that individuals unable to return to their home countries will not be included in the 2,500 daily limit that could lead to the closure of the border.

For example, China and Venezuela are mentioned in the report, with Venezuela halting deportation flights from the US in February and China being inconsistent with providing travel documents. Over 150,000 migrants from these two countries have entered the US illegally in fiscal year 2024, and Biden’s executive order could still allow hundreds of Venezuelans and Chinese to cross the border daily.

A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official dismissed Biden’s new order as “nonsense,” as per the memo cited in the Post.

The memo also mentions that individuals who are difficult to deport due to their home countries’ restrictions may be considered for expedited removal or placed in removal proceedings under Section 240, ultimately allowing them to be released into the US, similar to before Biden’s order, according to the report.

In addition to China and Venezuela, countries like Cambodia, Cuba, Eritrea, India, Iran, Iraq, Laos, Pakistan, and Russia have also refused deportations from the US. The report highlights the significant number of Chinese and Venezuelan migrants entering the US illegally each year.

Republicans have criticized Biden’s order and former President Donald Trump labeled it as a “public relations executive order,” stating that it allows a large number of people to enter the country and spreads misinformation.

Federal agents also expressed doubts about the effectiveness of Biden’s order, with one agent stating that it is “too little too late” and highlighting the administration’s open border policies.
