Biden’s Declaration of National Climate Emergency Debated for Accuracy
President Joe Biden claimed in an interview with The Weather Channel that he has already declared a national climate emergency, but later shifted his answer to “practically speaking.” However, Biden has not officially declared an emergency, although he has taken various steps to address climate change through executive and legislative actions. The White House clarified that when Biden referred to declaring an emergency, he was referring to his invocation of the Defense Production Act last year to promote clean energy production. Biden’s interview took place during a West Coast tour aimed at promoting his actions against the climate crisis. Last summer, Biden hinted at the possibility of declaring an emergency, but a deal reached on his signature Inflation Reduction Act negated the need for such a declaration. Currently, Biden has not declared a climate emergency, and a recent poll shows that 57% of Americans disapprove of his handling of the issue.
