Binnall and Burns Express Concern to Newsmax About Politics Interfering with Rule of Law in the Court

During the opening of former President Donald Trump’s New York business records trial on Monday, Trump attorney Jesse Binnall and former federal prosecutor Doug Burns emphasized to Newsmax the importance of keeping politics out of the courtroom for the preservation of the rule of law.

Binnall stated on Newsmax’s “American Agenda,” “Having an impartial judge is crucial for the rule of law. It is essential that the judge is perceived to be impartial, without any hint of bias, in order to maintain the integrity of the legal system. People need to have confidence that the courtroom proceedings are based on law, not politics.”

He continued, “It is evident that Judge [Juan] Merchan is pursuing a political agenda to undermine Donald Trump because he lacks faith in the American people. Aware of Trump’s popularity and potential return to the presidency, Merchan is attempting to influence the election using his judicial position. This poses a significant threat to the rule of law in our nation’s history.”

Merchan recently denied Trump’s request for recusal from the criminal case due to a perceived conflict of interest stemming from his daughter’s employment at a political consulting firm with Democratic clients. The trial began with prosecutors asking Merchan to reprimand Trump for violating a gag order by attacking potential witnesses.

Burns commented on the likely outcomes of the trial, stating, “Factually, they may convict him, but legally, there are numerous grounds for appeal, such as statute of limitations and improper felony charges. The prosecution will likely defend the case on the basis that it was not related to the election, but rather personal matters.”
