Black Voter Support for Biden Declines in Michigan and Pennsylvania According to USA Today/Suffolk Poll

President Joe Biden has experienced a significant decrease in support among Black voters in the key battleground states of Pennsylvania and Michigan compared to the 2020 elections, according to a recent USA Today/Suffolk University poll released on Sunday.

In Pennsylvania, 56.2% of Black voters surveyed say they would vote for Biden today, a decrease of 20 percentage points from the support he received four years ago. In Michigan, 54.4% of surveyed Black voters express support for Biden, a decline of 22 percentage points from the previous election.

About 15% of Black voters are in favor of a third-party candidate.

According to David Paleologos, director of Suffolk’s Political Research Center and lead researcher of the poll, Biden has the challenge of maintaining his 2020 support while trying to attract third-party voters.

Additional results from the poll include:

  • Former President Donald Trump’s support among Black voters has slightly increased from the 2020 election, with 10.8% backing him in Pennsylvania compared to about 8% four years ago, and with 15.2% supporting him in Michigan compared to 9% in the previous election.
  • In Pennsylvania, 16% of surveyed Black men support Trump compared to 6% of Black women. In Michigan, 22% of Black men back Trump compared to 9% of Black women.
  • In Pennsylvania, 16.4% of Black respondents support a third-party candidate: 7.6% support independent Cornel West, 7.4% back independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr., 1% support Green Party candidate Jill Stein, and 0.4% back Libertarian Chase Oliver.
  • Similar results are seen in Michigan, with Kennedy receiving 8% support, West 6.2%, Stein 1%, and Oliver 0.2%.
  • 13.8% of Black voters in both states say they are undecided.
