Blinken Persists in Cease-Fire Diplomacy in Saudi Arabia

Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to visit Saudi Arabia next week to discuss ongoing efforts for a negotiated cease-fire in Gaza to secure the release of the remaining hostages.

Israel is preparing for a major offensive in the southern Gaza city of Rafah to eliminate the last remaining Hamas battalions hiding among civilians.

Hamas is still holding 133 hostages out of the 253 captured during the Oct. 7 assault.

Blinken will discuss the recent increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza and stress the importance of sustaining this increase. He will also emphasize the need to prevent the conflict from spreading and continue efforts towards lasting peace and security in the region, including a pathway to an independent Palestinian state with security guarantees for Israel, as stated in a statement from his office.

Some Hamas officials have shown a willingness to disarm in exchange for a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration aims to eradicate Hamas and opposes a Palestinian state on 1967 lands.

Furthermore, Blinken will meet with the Gulf Cooperation Council to discuss enhancing security in the region and will coordinate a meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth, and Energy for Development regarding climate change and global energy transition.
