Bloomberg Poll: Voters Prefer Trump over Biden on Immigration Issues

As Congress continues to grapple on a border security deal, President Joe Biden appears increasingly weak when it comes to former President Donald Trump’s signature issue of immigration, a Bloomberg/Morning Consult poll found.

According to the survey, the percentage of voters who identified immigration as the “single most important issue” to them in the 2024 elections increased in six of the seven battleground states polled.

The seven states included in the survey are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

In those states, 61% of the voters blame Biden at least partially for the influx of migrants overwhelming the U.S.-Mexico border.

The poll found 38% of voters in those states blamed congressional Republicans and 30% blamed the Trump administration.

Voters in the battleground states surveyed say they trust Trump on immigration over Biden, 52% to 30% – a 22-point margin that has climbed 5 points since December.

In a one-on-one matchup, Trump leads Biden in the race for the White House 48% to 42%, which is similar to other polls showing Biden trailing Trump in swing states.

The economy was the top issue for respondents, with 51% saying they trusted Trump more to handle the economy versus 33% who said the same for Biden.

Immigration was the second most important issue for voters in the battleground states surveyed, with 52% saying they trusted Trump more on immigration compared to 30% who trusted Biden more.

While voters were down on the economy overall, they were much more optimistic when asked about the status of the economy in their own states, cities, and towns.

Just 29% of respondents said the U.S. economy was going in the “right direction,” while 45% said it was headed in the “right direction” in their state and 52% said it was moving in the “right direction” in their city or town.

Trump’s four criminal indictments may have galvanized his supporters and imbued his campaign with seemingly unstoppable momentum in the primary, but the 91 counts he faces have made him a vulnerable nominee in the general election.

According to the survey, 23% of self-identified Republicans in battleground states say they would not support the former president in November if he is convicted of a crime.

The poll was conducted Jan. 16-22 and surveyed 4,956 registered voters. It has a margin of error of plus/minus 1 percentage point.
