Blumencranz’s Message to Newsmax: Property Owners in New York Facing Attacks
New York Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz, R-Oyster Bay, discussed his recent legislative proposal to safeguard property owners in the state during an interview on Newsmax on Friday.
“This legislation is crucial because property rights are under threat in New York, and our current laws are failing property owners,” Blumencranz expressed on “Rob Schmitt Tonight.”
“It’s a matter of common sense. We want to clearly define squatters in the law, ensuring they do not have the same rights as tenants,” he added.
Blumencranz stressed the importance of distinguishing between squatters and tenants to prevent individuals from exploiting legal loopholes at the expense of property owners.
“Many constituents have shared distressing stories with me of people taking advantage of those seeking to provide housing by renting out a room in their home, leading to devastating consequences,” he remarked.
He attributed pushback against the bill to the influence of powerful tenants’ rights groups in New York, suggesting they aim to maintain an unfair advantage over property owners.
“They want to ensure property owners do not have the same rights as renters, creating a one-sided situation,” he emphasized.
“It’s crucial for us on Long Island to protect those pursuing the American dream of owning a beautiful home and enjoying the benefits of property ownership,” Blumencranz concluded.
The conversation on property rights gained urgency following an incident where squatters allegedly murdered a woman in her deceased mother’s Manhattan apartment.
According to New York Police Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, the victim, Nadia Vitels, 52, was found in a duffel bag in a closet on March 14, suffering severe injuries that led to her death, Pix 11 reported.
