Bolton claims ISIS-K might be responsible for Moscow attack in interview with Newsmax

Former ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton expressed concerns to Newsmax regarding the identity of the perpetrators behind the recent attack in Moscow, pointing towards possible ISIS-K involvement based on available evidence.

“Well, all we have, obviously, is what’s been made publicly available, but the people that have been arrested that we’ve seen are from Tajikistan, which is a long way from Ukraine,” he mentioned on “Eric Bolling The Balance.”

Bolton highlighted the importance of examining the individuals detained in connection with the attack, emphasizing their backgrounds and lack of ties to Ukraine.

“It would be consistent with previous Islamic terror attacks inside Russia that ISIS-K would reach out and attempt this. I haven’t heard any evidence of Ukrainian involvement or connections to Ukraine by these individuals,” he further explained.

In response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s allegations blaming Ukraine for the attack, Bolton stated that such allegations could benefit Putin politically by diverting attention from security weaknesses in Moscow.

“Putin has claimed that Ukraine was responsible because it suits his purpose to attempt to conceal the vulnerability that this attack revealed in his inability to protect targets in Moscow and gives him some rationale to escalate attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine,” Bolton reasoned.

Bolton emphasized the potential threat posed by ISIS-K, citing prior attacks in Iran and Afghanistan as examples of their operational capacities.

The former ambassador argued, “The first was an attack on a memorial service inside Iran for Qasem Soleimani. Now what? That demonstrates the capability to carry out quite sophisticated operations in two very different locations.”

Discussing the possibility of ISIS-K operatives operating within the United States, Bolton urged vigilance and drew parallels between the porous southern border and the potential for extremist groups to infiltrate.

“It’s not the United States. But you know, these individuals would have crossed Russia’s extensive southern border to enter Russia to reach Moscow. They could also cross our southern border,” he cautioned.

However, Bolton also acknowledged the possibility of Russian involvement, pointing to historical instances of Russian security forces manipulating terrorist incidents for political purposes.

“Look, I don’t put anything past Putin. We observed how Russian security forces behaved several years ago in the Chechen attack on the Nord-Ost theater also in Moscow, so the Russians attempting to incite a terrorist attack for their own internal agendas is possible,” he mentioned.
