Unifor, the largest private sector union in Canada, has reported that Canadian furniture manufacturer Prepac will be shutting down its manufacturing facility in Delta, British Columbia (B.C.), and will transfer all production to its other plant located in North Carolina, which commenced operations in 2021.

“Prepac is a leading North American designer, manufacturer, and drop shipper of functional and stylish RTA (Ready-To-Assemble) home furniture. We operate a ‘Just in Time’ inventory system, ensuring that stock is available for shipment within 2 business days! Our RTA product offerings include categories such as Bedroom Furniture, Home Office Furniture, Living Room Furniture, Media Storage, Audio Video Furniture, Entryway Furniture, and Utility Storage,” as detailed on the company’s website.
The closure will result in over 170 Canadians losing their employment at the British Columbia facility, with Unifor representatives indicating that these jobs will be transitioned to the North Carolina location.
“Our union has been highlighting concerns regarding loss of investment and production since Trump’s economic policies began impacting Canada and its labor force,” shared Unifor National President Lana Payne in a statement. “In this instance, Prepac and its equity stakeholders are leveraging tariffs as a reason to consolidate their operations in the U.S. This is sheer greed.”
Nick Bozikis, CEO of Prepac, stated that relocating to North Carolina positions the company’s manufacturing closer to its primary customer base in the United States.
This announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s declaration of 50% tariffs on steel and aluminum imported from Canada. He also indicated that additional tariffs may be imposed if Canada does not reduce its prohibitive tariffs on U.S. dairy and agricultural goods.
“Canada must immediately eliminate their Anti-American Farmer Tariff of 250% to 390% on various U.S. dairy products, which has been regarded as outrageous,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
“… If other inappropriate, longstanding tariffs are not similarly removed by Canada, I will significantly increase the tariffs on automobiles entering the U.S. on April 2nd, which will essentially put an end to the automotive manufacturing industry in Canada,” he added.
Founded in Vancouver in 1979, Prepac established its Delta facility in 2005. However, in 2019, the company was purchased by the Toronto private equity firm TorQuest Partners.
Unifor remains the largest union in Canada’s private sector, encompassing more than 320,000 members across every significant sector of the economy.
