The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) declared on Tuesday that it will reduce $11.4 billion in funding to state and community health departments, non-governmental organizations, and international recipients.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has concluded, and HHS can no longer squander billions of taxpayer dollars responding to a non-existent pandemic that Americans have moved on from years ago,” stated HHS Director of Communications Andrew Nixon. “HHS is shifting its focus toward funding projects that will fulfill President Trump’s directive to tackle our chronic disease epidemic and Make America Healthy Again.”
HHS is responsible for overseeing 13 agencies, including the CDC, tasked with safeguarding the health of U.S. citizens. Notifications of funding cuts started appearing on Monday, with recipients granted 30 days to adjust their financial records.
These latest reductions follow previous cuts enacted under Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., which included the cancellation of hundreds of millions of dollars in grants for researching vaccine hesitancy, LGBTQ issues, and HIV prevention support.
“With the pandemic now over, the grants and cooperative agreements are deemed unnecessary as their limited purpose has expired,” stated termination notices sent to grantees on Monday and shared with NBC News.
As reported by NBC News, the funds were allocated for COVID-19 testing and vaccination efforts, as well as to support community health workers. Additionally, they contributed to global COVID-19 initiatives.
According to the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) website, HHS also retracted $877 million in grants to the Texas Department of Health and $482 million from Florida’s Department of Health.
