Certain Democrats Indicate Backing for Troubled House GOP Leader Johnson
During an interview with Fox News Sunday, Democratic U.S. Representative Jared Moskowitz stated that removing Johnson now could empower U.S. adversaries like Russia and Iran during a time of global instability.
Another Democratic Representative, Ro Khanna, also expressed opposition to the idea of ousting Johnson as speaker and believes he should remain in his position until the end of his term.
The support from Democrats for Johnson may prevent efforts from within his own party to remove him from his role.
Earlier this month, Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene introduced a motion to vote on removing Johnson if he allowed a vote on additional aid for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The House ultimately passed a bill providing almost $61 billion to address the conflict, a key priority for the Biden administration.
Greene, reiterating on Sunday that Johnson should resign, accused him of favoring Democrats in his actions.
When asked on Fox News if she plans to present the motion, Greene responded, “It’s inevitable regardless of Johnson’s decision.”
If a vote on the speaker occurs, Johnson has the backing of Republican Representative Michael McCaul, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
“I believe Johnson’s standing has improved significantly because he did what was right,” McCaul told ABC News on Sunday. “I think he is in a good position,” he added.
Johnson ascended to the position of speaker after a group of aggressive Republicans removed his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, causing a standstill in the House for several weeks.
Former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the upcoming election against Biden on Nov. 5, has voiced support for Johnson, commending him for handling difficult circumstances effectively.
