Chances of Mace Facing Runoff Are High Despite Trump’s Backing

Just 48 hours before the three-way Republican primary in South Carolina’s 1st District (Charleston), it appears incumbent Rep. Nancy Mace may be headed for a run-off on June 25.

Despite receiving endorsements from Donald Trump and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, Mace is facing a tough challenge from Catherine Templeton and Bill Young.

All three candidates share similar views on key issues like being pro-life and anti-illegal immigration, as well as being staunch supporters of Trump.

Templeton has been critical of Mace’s high staff turnover and expense reimbursement issues.

Mace, in turn, has criticized Templeton for her ties to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and labeled her as his puppet. McCarthy’s political action committee and other groups are actively working to defeat Mace.

The primary is shaping up to be a battleground between Trump’s influence and McCarthy’s quest for revenge against those who opposed him.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has also thrown his support behind Templeton.

This primary race will be closely watched both locally and nationally as a test of political strength and a sign of McCarthy’s comeback efforts.
