Liz Cheney, the former Republican representative from Wyoming and vocal opponent of President-elect Donald Trump, criticized him sharply after he remarked that House committee members who “destroyed” evidence related to January 6th should face incarceration, calling Trump’s words yet another “assault on the rule of law.”

“Let’s be clear: Donald Trump tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election and grab power,” Cheney stated in response. “He incited a violent mob and directed them to the U.S. Capitol, where they attacked police, invaded the building, and disrupted the official electoral vote count. Trump sat and watched as police officers were violently assaulted and the Capitol was besieged, refusing to act for hours to tell the mob to disperse.”
“This is the most significant constitutional violation by any president in our country’s history. Trump’s claim that Congress members investigating his unlawful actions should be jailed reflects his ongoing assault on our legal foundations and the principles of our democracy,” she added.
Cheney’s strong rebuke of Trump came after he criticized the January 6 committee, which was composed of seven Democrats and two Republicans, including Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom are no longer serving and have been denounced as “RINOs” by GOP leaders. The acronym RINO denotes “Republican In Name Only.”
Trump claims the committee “deleted and destroyed” key evidence related to the investigation of January 6th, 2021, and asserts that they should be punished.
“Cheney committed an unforgivable act, along with Thompson and the other members of the politically biased committee,” Trump said. “They wiped and discarded all evidence.”
“Cheney was in on it. So were Bennie Thompson and the others on that committee,” Trump continued. “For what they did, they genuinely should be jailed.”
The January 6th committee concluded that Trump was the “central figure” responsible for the chaos at the Capitol and unanimously recommended that the Justice Department prosecute him.
In retaliation, House Republicans issued an alternate report, alleging that the January 6th committee had employed “Hollywood producers” to craft a damaging political narrative while also “deleting” evidence instead of engaging in a genuine investigation.
“THE SELECT COMMITTEE DELETED RECORDS AND HIDDEN EVIDENCE – Representatives Thompson and Cheney did not provide video recordings of witness interviews and depositions even though they used these recordings in their high-profile, primetime hearings. A Subcommittee recovered over one hundred deleted or password-protected files, including some that were erased just days before Republicans regained the majority. They also concealed multiple transcribed interviews of witnesses with direct knowledge of Trump’s actions on January 6,” the report stated.
Cheney also asserted that Trump’s allegations about the January 6th committee destroying evidence are “absurd and unfounded.”
Furthermore, the incoming 47th-president previously derided “dumb as a rock” Liz Cheney while she campaigned alongside Vice President Kamala Harris to support her, inadvertently aiding his ascent. Political analysts have also accused Liz and her father, Dick Cheney, of lacking loyalty to the GOP unless it serves their interests or financial gains.
“Arab voters are very disappointed that Comrade Kamala Harris, the Worst Vice President in the History of the United States and a low IQ individual, is campaigning with ‘dumb as a rock’ War Hawk, Liz Cheney, who, like her father, urged Biden to foolishly go to War in the Middle East, also desires conflict with every Islamic nation imaginable,” Trump remarked.
