USA gymnast Jordan Chiles’ frustrations turned to cheers on Monday in Paris, as she made the podium in the women’s gymnastics floor final to cap off the last gymnastics event at the 2024 Olympic Games. This was the first individual medal for Chiles in her Olympics career.

Chiles finished her routine with a 13.666, but an inquiry was opened into her score when the United States appealed, claiming that her difficulty score was incorrect.

Following a review, the judges bumped up her difficulty from a 5.8 to the correct 5.9, which caused Chiles to leapfrog Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Voinea for the bronze medal.

Chiles’ final score of 13.766 edged out the Romanian gymnasts by 0.066 points, but was 0.367 points behind fellow American Simone Biles for a silver medal place.

Biles was defeated by Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade falling behind 0.033 points, after a few deductions to her score.

Barbosu was beginning to celebrate that she won the bronze medal before she learned that Chiles made it to the podium over her.

Barbosu was left lost for words and stunned when she saw the score change.

However, the judge’s decision was met with criticism. Some users on social media said Chiles should not have won the bronze.

“Romania got robbed in the gymnastics floor final, how did they reject Sabrina’s inquiry but accepted Jordan Chiles, when Sabrina [Voinea]’s routine definitely deserved a higher score and I feel bad for Ana Barbosu thinking she won the bronze and celebrated,” wrote one user.

“Boy imagine if Ana Barbosu were from USA. She would’ve secured that Bronze. Romania’s team getting robbed idec,”another user said.
