In the ongoing trade conflict, China has introduced an additional 84% tariff on its levies applicable to U.S. imports.

Furthermore, China declared on Wednesday that it would increase the previously set 34% tariff to align with President Donald Trump’s measures.
This latest action by China, effective Thursday, follows shortly after Trump’s monumental 104% tariff came into force.
China’s commerce ministry recently expressed its intention to “fight to the end” amid the intensifying trade dispute with the U.S.
“If the U.S. insists on further escalating its economic and trade restrictions, China is resolute and equipped to take necessary countermeasures and fight to the very end,” stated the Ministry of Commerce in a detailed policy declaration.
Alongside the new tariffs, China has also listed 12 American companies on its export control roster and added six to its section of unreliable entities.
Moreover, exports of dual-use items to these firms will now be prohibited.
In response, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent criticized Beijing’s recent measures, telling Fox Business Network that the retaliatory tariffs will be detrimental for China.
“It’s unfortunate that the Chinese are unwilling to come to the negotiating table, as they are the most egregious violators in the global trading system,” Bessent remarked.
“Their economy is the most imbalanced in modern history, and I assure you that this escalation will not benefit them.”
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Trump mentioned that numerous countries have been “calling us up” ever since he planned to impose extensive tariffs on nearly 90 nations.
“I’m telling you, these countries are calling us up, trying to curry favor with me,” Trump expressed at the National Republican Congressional Committee Dinner late Tuesday, just before the tariffs took effect.
“They are eager to strike a deal. ‘Please, sir, we’ll do anything for a deal!’” he added.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared similar sentiments with the 47th president on Tuesday.
“China made a mistake in choosing to retaliate,” Leavitt stated.
“When America is attacked, the president retaliates with greater force. That’s why 104% tariffs on China will be implemented tonight at midnight.”
In total, Trump’s 50% retaliatory tariff on China is in addition to the 34% reciprocal levy and the previously imposed 20% duty on Chinese imports, culminating in a total tariff rate of 104%.
