Chris Wallace of CNN suggests that Menendez’s Senate presence is no longer sustainable.

The outcry over Sen. Bob Menendez’s attendance at a classified briefing on Ukraine shows his presence in the Senate is “untenable,” CNN anchor Chris Wallace said Wednesday. 

Menendez, D-N.J., who attended the classified meeting earlier in the day, told CNN’s Manu Raju when pressed on the issue that even though he’s been indicted on several charges, including acting as a foreign agent for Egypt, he still has the security clearance to participate, reports Mediaite.   

Wallace posed his question in a discussion on CNN’s “NewsNight” Wednesday with Abby Phillip, after questioned about whether Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer should “allow this to continue, given the severity of the allegations facing Menendez.” 

“The accusation is an accusation, innocent until proven guilty,” Phillip said. 

Wallace responded that the matter has created an “untenable situation” in the Senate, considering that “more than half of the Democratic caucus, more than seven — rather, 30, of the Senate Democrats have urged Menendez to resign, but he is still a senator.”

But still, Menendez has been accused, not convicted, said Wallace, noting that the senator has stepped down as chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, though he has remained a member. 

“I guess the caucus is not ready at this point to say, No, you can’t go to briefings at all,” Wallace said.

Phillip noted that given the Senate is a “self-governing body” that can do “whatever they want,” and who which senator attends briefings is a choice made by Senate leaders and members of the party.
