Columbia Students Tell Newsmax: Protests Intensify Following Shafik Testimony
Antisemitism on the Columbia University campus has worsened after school President Minouche Shafik testified to Congress. According to Jonas Du, the editor-in-chief at the Columbia University Sundial, if she resigns amid the escalating pro-Palestinian protests, it will lead to even more chaos. Du shared with Newsmax on Tuesday.
Following her statement to Congress regarding steps to address antisemitism, the situation has worsened. Du recorded video of protesters demanding the repetition of Hamas Oct. 7 attacks in Israel multiple times, aimed at three Jewish classmates outside the campus gates.
Subsequently, water was splashed on Jewish counter-protesters the next night, accompanied by threatening statements. Du expressed concerns about the lack of peace on campus despite claims by some, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, that the protests are mostly peaceful.
While Du believes Shafik should not resign, he urges her to take decisive action to clear unauthorized protests and ensure campus security. He highlighted the breach of campus rules allowing outsiders to enter and cause disturbances.
One such person mentioned by Du is Nerdeen Kiswani, an anti-Israel activist supposedly banned from campus. Despite this, Kiswani continues to enter and give speeches, raising further safety concerns among Jewish students.
At the same time, Nick Chimicles, editor for the Sundial and Columbia student, expressed feeling unsafe on campus due to the presence of NYPD and outside agitators mixing with student protesters. He emphasized the need for increased security measures and remote learning options for Jewish students.
