Columbia University Graduates Participate in Anti-Israel Protest, Use Zip Ties to Rip Diplomas

During Columbia University’s commencement last week, graduates made a bold statement by wearing zip-tie handcuffs, waving pro-Palestinian signs, and even tearing up diplomas on stage in protest, as reported by the New York Post.

With tensions high over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Columbia University’s commencement ceremonies saw graduating students expressing dissent in dramatic ways. Despite security concerns leading to a scaled-down event, some graduates took bold actions.

The protests at Columbia have garnered national attention and sparked similar demonstrations at universities across the U.S. Students are calling for a cease-fire in Gaza and urging universities to divest from companies with ties to Israel, according to Reuters.

Video footage captured students storming the stage to receive their degrees, some with hands bound in zip ties. Graduates like Tarsis Salome and Maliha Fairooz made strong statements as they accepted their degrees with visible signs of support for Palestine.

Other graduates, including Veda Kamra and Hilary Margaret Elizabeth Ludlow, displayed “Free Palestine” signs and participated in the protest by showing restraints on their hands. These acts followed weeks of turmoil on campus, including clashes with law enforcement and the cancellation of the university-wide commencement.

The decision to alter the commencement format was made in light of escalating protests and security concerns. University officials moved ceremonies to a different location to ensure safety for attendees.

These actions by protesting graduates highlight the passionate perspectives and deep divisions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, leaving a lasting impact on the celebratory event.
