Congressman Byron Donalds Speaks to Newsmax: Discusses the “Honor and Humbling” Aspects of VP Talks

Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., told Newsmax that he’s honored to hear people speculating he might have made former President Donald Trump’s short list for vice presidential picks.

“It’s really an honor to be mentioned,” Donalds said during an appearance on Newsmax’s “Huckabee” Sunday night. “It’s something that, going into Congress, you don’t really think about and so for voters and people in politics to constantly bring your name up is really humbling, really an honor.”

“I’m gonna do whatever President Trump needs done in order for us to get him back in the White House,” he continued. “If it’s that seat, so be it. If it’s other things, that’s fine as well.

“I’m committed to saving the country. That’s what I’m focused on. He’ll make that decision when the time comes, but I think he raised a very good point. We are now focused on the general election.”

On Sunday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination and threw his support behind Trump, who has dominated the primary field for months.

In a video posted on X, DeSantis said he could not “ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources if we don’t have a clear path to victory.”

His departure leaves just Trump and former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley in the race for the Republican nomination.

DeSantis’ exit from the race comes less than two days before the New Hampshire primary, where polls showed him trailing far behind both the former president and Haley. The Florida governor finished second in the Iowa caucuses last week.

Donalds predicted that Trump would cruise to victory in the Granite State on Tuesday and, with the Republican primary essentially over, the focus would shift.

“I believe Tuesday night in New Hampshire, we’re gonna go ahead and win that in a big way,” he said. “And then Nikki Haley, it’ll be time for her to drop out, in my opinion. At that point, we need to be focused on Joe Biden and the radical Democrats and what they’re doing to this country.”

The Florida congressman joined several other congressional Republicans in endorsing Trump’s campaign in April 2023 — before DeSantis declared he was running.

“There is only one leader at this time in our nation’s history who can seize the moment and deliver what we need — to get us back on track, provide strength and resolve, and make America great again,” Donalds said at the time. “That is why I’m honored to endorse President Donald J. Trump for president in 2024, and I ask my fellow Americans to join me.”
