Congresswoman Van Duyne Tells Newsmax: Washington, D.C. Spending is ‘Irresponsible’

Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Tuesday that congressional Republicans need to get tough on spending or else it’s “a whole lot of trouble.”

Van Duyne said she’s not sure which way she’ll vote on Speaker Mike Johnson’s $1.59 trillion top line spending agreement reached with Democrats over the weekend, which he hailed as a “good deal for conservatives,” but she said spending in Washington, D.C., is “completely irresponsible.”

“I don’t know if the verbiage is out yet on [Johnson’s] bill, so I can’t say whether I’m going to vote for it. But I will tell you if we do not curb spending, we are in a whole lot of heat and a whole lot of trouble,” Van Duyne said on “The Chris Salcedo Show.”

She noted that the country’s $34 trillion in debt, a trillion of which was added last month.

“We spent $475 billion on interest rates alone in 2022 that’s expected to go to $1.4 trillion in just 10 years. That is completely irresponsible,” Van Duyne told Salcedo. “And we have to change how D.C. spends and looks at spending money because it’s been completely irresponsible.”

As an example, she highlighted the $14 billion for the southern border in President Joe Biden’s $106 billion supplemental aid package that he’s asking of Congress.

“The $14 billion that Biden is asking for additional money is not to protect our border. It’s to hire more people to quote, ‘efficiently’ get people, illegal immigrants, into our country,” she told Salcedo.

“We have to hold the line and not vote for that nonsense.”
