Conservative Senators Promise to Stop Supporting Democratic Agenda

A group of eight conservative senators, led by Utah Republican Mike Lee, issued a collective statement on Friday, declaring their decision to withdraw support for Democratic initiatives in the Senate. This includes certain funding for the Biden administration and the confirmation of appointees.

The letter was in response to the recent conviction of former President Donald Trump, which the senators criticized as undermining the rule of law. They specifically targeted the Department of Justice for engaging in what they described as “partisan lawfare.”

Senator Lee emphasized the importance of holding those responsible for politicizing the judicial system to account. He stated, “we are no longer cooperating with any Democrat legislative priorities,” in a separate post on X.

The letter outlined three specific actions the senators will take, including refusing to increase non-security funding for the administration, voting against political and judicial appointments, and halting the expedited consideration of Democratic legislation that does not directly impact the safety of the American people.

Joining Senator Lee in signing the letter were Senators J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio, Tommy Tuberville, Rick Scott, Eric Schmitt, Marsha Blackburn, and Roger Marshall.

Former President Trump was convicted on charges of falsifying business records in Manhattan, with sentencing scheduled for July 11. The senators expressed their disapproval of the White House’s actions and its impact on American politics.

House Republicans have taken steps to defund Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office in an effort to halt federal investigations into Trump.
