Court Rules Brazil’s Former President Bolsonaro to Stand Trial for Alleged Coup Attempt – One America News Network

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been ordered to stand trial for his alleged involvement in a scheme to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election, as ruled by the Supreme Court of Brazil.

In February, Bolsonaro and 34 others were charged with five crimes, including conspiracy to commit a coup d’état. The alleged coup involved plans to assassinate elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his vice president, and a Supreme Court minister. Bolsonaro has denied these accusations.

On Wednesday, the court unanimously agreed to accept charges against eight defendants, including Bolsonaro, his vice presidential candidate, and several military and political leaders.
As the verdicts were being cast, Bolsonaro criticized the judges for their swift action in this case, sharing a message on X.
“Everyone says that the process will be concluded by the end of 2025, even though there is no precedent for such speed in a case of this magnitude. And why? Because everyone knows that what is taking place is, in fact, a kind of legal attack on democracy: a political trial, conducted in a partial, biased and openly unfair manner by a completely compromised and suspicious rapporteur,” he remarked, referring to Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
The charges also involve an alleged scheme to stage a pro-Bolsonaro coup in the interval between the October 2022 election and the riots that erupted in Brasília on January 8, 2023—just one week after Lula’s inauguration.
“It was a veritable pitched battle … It was an extraordinarily violent attempted coup d’état,” stated Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes during the court proceedings.
Bolsonaro, who attended the court session on Tuesday, expressed to reporters his anticipation of justice in this matter.
“I’m fine. We always expect justice. Nothing is substantiated in the accusations made in a biased manner by the Federal Police,” he stated.
He further likened the proceedings to a rigged soccer game, posting on X, “In my case, the referee whistles against the game before it even starts… and it’s also the VAR (video assistant referee), the linesman, the coach, and the opposing team’s top scorer; all wrapped in one person.”
If found guilty, the former president could face a prison term of up to 28 years, according to CNN.
In 2023, Bolsonaro was barred from holding public office for eight years after a separate investigation revealed his misconduct in spreading false information about the integrity of Brazilian elections.
